Frede's painted works are inextricably linked to his comprehensive understanding of digital image processing. Uncompromising grids of serial rectangles, which, as it were, appear as pixels carved out with a palette knife, filled with color, shed their glossy surface, become tangible, and seem to grow organically. And yet, it is about more than a technical implementation of digital design possibilities, as he draws on very classic art historical topoi in his paintings. Thus, the rigor of the composition recalls the Constructivists of classical modernism, the application and flow of paint to American action painting, and the golden backgrounds to the transfiguration of motifs in Byzantine tradition. Frede's paintings carefully and vividly translate these traditions into our increasingly digitally shaped cultural horizon.
